When we give something of our own to support those who, as a profession are doing the Lord's work, we are in essence giving a wave offering unto the Lord. "And they come in -- the men with the women -- every willing-hearted one -- they have brought in nose-ring, and ear-ring, and seal-ring, and necklace, all golden goods, even every one who hath waved a wave-offering of gold to Jehovah." (Exodus 35:22)

Wave offerings were so called, because they were waved by the priests (Ex. 29:24, 26, 27; Lev. 7:20-34; 8:27; 9:21; 10:14, 15, etc.), in token of a solemn special presentation to God. The offering then became the property of the priests.
